Our commitment at Harvest to preach verse-by-verse through books of the Bible means that we don’t get to skip the hard parts. So, here we are this message at Acts 2:1-13, the Day of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

The controversy is actually one of secondary importance when it comes to what the Church believes and practices. It centres on the gift of tongues and the founding of the Pentecostal movement. At the core of Pentecostal belief is the understanding from Acts 2 that believers can be saved apart from receiving the full measure of the Holy Spirit’s filling. A subsequent act for all believers would be the baptism of the Spirit, or the second blessing, which, in Pentecostal teaching, is always manifested with the believer speaking in tongues. In simple terms, they have made the very unique Acts 2:1-13 account a normative event for all believers throughout history. While we don’t believe that, it is not something that should separate believers or churches.

As we look at this passage, we’ll see what is normative and applicable to us in how the Holy Spirit works today in the lives of believers. The Spirit continues to work in sudden, unexpected ways. He works powerfully and undeniably so that we should be in awe of him. And he works in a way that compels a response. The Holy Spirit cannot be ignored. All of that was true on that special day 2000 years ago, and it is true today.
